A few weeks ago, I found myself in the glamorous, sophisticated setting of… a parking lot, killing time before a Kesha concert with my husband Jake, our 12-year-old daughter, and her friend. (As one does.)
Somewhere between “TikTok” and the concession stand chicken fingers, my daughter and her friend decided the best use of our time was to film me and Jake dancing "like parents." Convenient, since that's the only way we do, in fact, know how to dance anyway.
The result? 👉 “How to Dance Like a 45-Year-Old”
It’s silly, it’s awkward, it’s… somehow at 7.4 million views on Instagram. That's like the entire population of Hong Kong watching your video. If I'd known this would hit so many eyeballs I would have worn different shorts. Alas...
Here’s the thing: This is not my normal content. I usually talk about leadership, communication, executive presence—all the stuff that makes people better at their jobs and, hopefully, their lives. I don’t typically serve up parking-lot-dad-dance energy to the beat of my daughter's heckling.
And yet… this goofy little video has led to conversations, connections, and even a call from someone who wanted to hire me as an event emcee because she saw the video and it sent her into a rabbit hole on my feed.
Here’s the takeaway: sometimes the thing that doesn’t “fit the brand” ends up opening new doors anyway.
It’s the same promise I make when I step onstage for a keynote or workshop: professional development so enjoyable you won’t realize you’re learning… until it’s too late.
That dance was fun. It didn’t fit the "plan." And it worked anyway.
Maybe for you it’s trying a new approach at work, speaking up in a meeting you’d normally sit out, or saying yes to something that feels a little out of your lane. Who knows? That thing might be the unexpected spark that pushes your career—or your team—forward.
See you back here next month for another tip to help you hear and be heard, but let’s not be strangers between now and then, k?
Here are some ways to connect (and get lots of free content... and now, also new dance moves 😉) between now and then:
And of course you know I’d always love to work with you and your people. If you’re ever looking for a keynote speaker or corporate training, just let me know the details here:
Thanks for being here and thanks for working at getting on the same page with the people in your life. We're all in this together!
Keep dancing,
